Research, leadership and policy.

I have an extensive track record in health research, academic writing and evaluation, spanning public health, cancer research, mental health, suicide prevention, clinical trials and health services improvement.

Early in my career I worked as a clinical trials researcher in haematology at the Royal Devon and Exeter, contributing to national and international studies in haematology and later gynaecological oncology. My research experience has since expanded to include qualitative thematic analyses, narrative reviews and service evaluations, with an interest in realist reviews and population-level public health assessment.

I have authored and co-authored multiple publications, and co-written book chapters, focused on improving outcomes for doctors under pressure, suicide risk in medical professionals, resilience training, education in medical schools, and cancer patient experience. My publications include contributions to Psycho-Oncology, BMJ-supported programmes, and the national Lung Cancer Screening Programme protocol SOPs.

I have presented research nationally and internationally, delivering posters and oral presentations at BTS, ERS and European cancer conferences. I am part of the NIHR CARES research programme, which seeks to understand challenging environments and improve culture through direct government policy outcomes, and I am also involved in CAOS. My current research addresses staff wellbeing, lung cancer pathways and innovations in population screening.

My senior leadership roles have required detailed engagement with national frameworks, public health strategies and policy implementation. These have included Consultant Nurse, Clinical Lead in Occupational Health, and Cancer Alliance Project Manager.

I have contributed to national cancer programmes, staff wellbeing initiatives, Primary Care Trust-level planning and NIHR-affiliated research. I have sat on national and regional boards, including Target Ovarian Cancer UK and lung cancer screening governance structures, where I am the RA national chair, and I have been responsible for policy development within multiple clinical contexts.

I have worked with national partners including NHSEI, Target Ovarian Cancer UK, the Defence Medical Welfare Service, the Quality Network for Veterans Mental Health Services, NHS Trusts across the South West, local mental health charities, universities and ICB-level strategic groups.

The first Macmillan post I held was the first of its kind in the UK, and due to its success more were funded. The lung cancer screening post I held was a pilot, and those posts are now recognised as successful and will continue. My leadership is grounded in psychological safety, collaborative problem-solving and respectful challenge.
